Not just the leaves are changing this year. We have the new President of Western, Sabah Randhawa to get to know... Western hit a new record of enrolled freshmen including transfer students for the history books! This year Western welcomed in 2,888 new incoming freshmen and 1,141 undergraduate transfer students into the community. Overall enrollment numbers from last fall quarter have rose by 242 students. The percent enrollment of students with different ethnic backgrounds went up by 24.9%. That increase in diversity of students across campus has created the need for expansion of the Ethnic Student Center. Western’s diversity outreach with expanding the Ethnic Student Center then wants to try and come up with campus wide events to encourage community within the university.
There’s 18 clubs within the Ethnic Student Center that are active, have Facebook pages, and all set up and a constitution for each club. Having the expansion of the Student Ethnic Center could bring more possibilities for the minority students. Western gave out a “Western Reads” book for all incoming new students this year, on the topic of diversity to spread awareness of the topic, the book is called Between the World and Me, by Ta-Naehisi Coates. It talks about inclusion combined with diversity and has become a required book for some classes and book-inspired programs on campus this year. Western as a whole is trying to take strides into teaching diversity and inclusion and spread awareness across campus so that everyone, faculty and students alike will feel safe and comfortable attending school on this campus. The school is heading towards the right direction, they are taking the steps necessary to become a better aware and more open community, there’s just a few more hurdles to get over in the long run before we all can come together as an entire collective of diverse students. There’s a quote from the book that states “This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it" (Coates 2015). When skimming the book, that quote stood out. It sums up what Western wants to accomplish, everyone finding their own way to live in this world cohesively together even if we aren’t all the same or come from the same place.
