Our local food Co-op in Bellingham is more than a run of the mill grocery store. The Co-op references the shining qualities that can be seen all around our locale. They envision a ‘just and livable world with a sustainable economy founded on informed choice and cooperative values’, and their mission is to create a ‘consumer-owned grocery store serving the community with quality products and honest information’. The Co-op has an excellent selection of products, hot prepared foods, and service that caters to all customers! On top of their admirable motto, they are a great service to WWU and the community.
In an interview with the community outreach manager, Karl Meyer, we found out just how intertwined the Co-op is with WWU. He explained that the co-op is often the go to grocery store for many students, and they constantly try and stay aware of their college/alumni shopper needs, taking extra steps to provide and cater to them. Their catering extends past their products, whereas they often provide many job opportunities with varying titles to students and alumni alike! Karl says they often see how Western’s educational system creates well rounded employees that display important skills. The favor is returned by giving educational opportunities back to Western by leading in-store tours to several WWU classes a year, many of which include aspiring International exchange students and Fairhaven college students.
Their support extends past Western’s classes and heads straight into their generous ability to donate to WWU activities and clubs whenever they can. This extra backing that they provide is important because promotes student driven thinking, and allow activities that may be the highlight of someone’s day. The Co-op promotes and emphasizes the importance of sustainability and are often up on campus during the info fair, sustainability fair, and Earth Day event providing information to any and all that are interested.
Clearly the Co-op is a local favorite, and for good reason. They try connect the community with vigor, and give so many opportunities to Western. You wouldn’t necessarily be foolish if you didn’t take advantage of the Food Co-op, but you surely would be missing out!
Keeping you up to date on the progress of the WeAreWWU fundraising campaign!
