Rising Cost of Tuition
In the last blog it was established that it is hard to get into college (like we didn’t already know that), but what we haven’t addressed is the cost of college. College seems to be getting more expensive every year. The average cost for tuition, room, and board is about $14,300 at public institutions and $37,800 for private institutions. (Tuition costs of colleges and universities) Tuition is simply on the rise, it used to be that working while in college would be enough to minimize student loans but not any longer. The cost of higher education has risen by more than 538% since 1985. I know what you’re thinking “everything costs more now” but medical costs have only gone up by about 286%. On the bright side this year’s increase in tuition are smaller than average years, the bad news is that cumulative debt is steadily increasing and real incomes haven’t grown for more than 10 years except for top earners (Lorin). So people aren’t making a great deal of more money yet the cost of higher education is still rising, what does this mean? DEBT!
I hope you’re sitting down for this one. In the class of 2013, sixty nine percent of students had an average student loan debt of $28,400 (USNews.com). After leaving school they have to enter the job market, if they don’t get a well-paying job quickly then the interest on these loans will begin to increase. For grad school the loans are worse, a quarter of graduate students owe almost $100,000 in student loans (USNews.com). Half of students have reconsidered finishing college due to student loans (Bidwell). We can change this!!! This is why our class is so passionate about this fundraiser, this is why we are paying to work our butts off to raise money for WWU students. This is why 100% of these funds go to help WWU students. Students need scholarships to help them attain a higher education please make the pledge and donate to WeAreWWU to help students get an education and achieve their dream. Please make the pledge and donate to WeAreWWU.
