So you went to the We Are WWU event, and you liked what you saw. You interacted with some on the team members, had a few brews, listened to some great entertainment, and started making a plan in your head on how to get in on the action. Well, let me help.
If you’re a Western student, you’re in luck. If you didn’t know by now, the We Are WWU fundraiser is fully ran by the students. Pretty sweet, huh? If you’re a communication major, you’re in even better shape. There are a few specific classes that you can take with Heather Davidson that can get you in on this fantastic event, plus gain a ton of valuable skills like promoting using social media and event planning.
I’d start at Communication 244, Advocacy Through Media, which helps promote the fundraiser by using social media channels such as Instagram and YouTube. All great things you can use in future careers! Next, one could take Communication 318, Professional Communication, and for a service learning project you can work with Heather Davidson on the actual scholarship side of things. You help raise awareness of the scholarship, and make it the whole event come in full circle from students to the community back to the students. Communication 308, fundraising, helps put on the actual event at Boundary Bay.
Although this is a full quarter of planning and an intense weekend of putting the event on, you also get to create solid relationships and drink great IPA. I’d call that a win-win. Although it may now seem that there is a lot of work that goes into May 21st, it’s because there is. But it’s worth the skills earned and friendships made.
