Enriching the Educational Experience for Students, by Students
Western Washington University in beautiful Bellingham, WA, is home to over 17,000 unique students, faculty and staff. Our campus provides a rich learning environment overflowing with variety and produces alumni who go on to be second to none in a number of diverse fields and organizations. What began in 2015 as a service-learning project in COMM308: Communication and Fundraising to showcase the faces of our campus and rally support for scholarships has now bloomed into an ongoing campaign developed and maintained by students.
Spring quarter, 2016, students continued to develop professional skills, community relationships, and a culture of philanthropy among our campus community. Applying the values of accessible philanthropy to recruit donors willing to invest in the education of future Western Washington University Vikings, this crew of 26 students comes together each Spring to put their course curriculum into immediate practice raising support for WWU students. Money raised is then managed and dedicated to select University efforts selected by each round of students in an effort to enrich the educational experience. Whether through scholarships, support of students clubs, athletics or other student services, #WeAreWWU seeks to provide much needed resources for the WWU Community in the face of ever-rising higher education while giving students tangible experience in program planning, community building, fundraising, marketing, assessment, event planning, and advocacy through media.
We recognize that service to others and a culture of philanthropy are important components to well-rounded citizenry. While the average student may struggle to find extra income for charitable donations, our accessible philanthropy model is built on the notion that many small pebbles will make the well overflow. All donations matter because all support matters! The accessible philanthropy model encourages many small donations instead of handfuls of large ones to encourage equitable feelings of efficacy for all donors, building a community of support from within itself and unleashing already present resources to support focused, tangible outcomes.
