When we hear the words, “it’s dead week”, we all, well, feel a little dead inside right? It’s crunch time. Finals are right around the corner and our brains are nearly about to explode with all the studying and homework we have to cram in. It’s overwhelming. Amongst all the craziness and pressure of doing well on finals, we often forget the most important thing; ourselves. Yes, doing well on finals is important, but it is more important that we are also taking care of ourselves. So, I thought I would provide some ways to give yourself some “me time” even if you think you don’t have five minutes to spare. So without further ado, here are ten different ways you can chill out during finals week!
1. Go work out!
Some of you may not like exercise, or say you don’t have time. Even a brisk walk around your neighborhood can help you relax and get those endorphins going! And those of you who DO like to work out, go hit up the Rec. Center on campus!
2. Clean something!
Now this is not the ideal outlet for everyone, but this actually helps a lot of people relieve stress! Do some dishes, scrub the floor, and let out your stressful energy!
3. Blast some music and have a solo dance party
Real talk, this is the perfect outlet for ANYONE! I am guilty of doing this on a regular basis. Blast your Justin Bieber and party on.
4. Pet a furry friend
This is a personal favorite. It’s crazy how comforting it can be to snuggle up with an animal. The library actually brings animals to help you destress during dead and finals week. DO take advantage of it!
5. Do Some Yoga
We may all not be yogi masters, but yoga can really help us with relaxing and mindfulness. You can do yoga videos online, (Yoga with Adriene is a favorite!) or go to one of the classes offered at the Rec. Center!
6. Embrace the Outdoors
Being outside can be so refreshing. Go for a hike, a walk, lay in a hammock, relax by the waterfront, whatever outdoor endeavors you enjoy! Especially in an area like Bellingham with so many areas to explore, there’s no excuse not to get out there!
7. Call a best friend or family member
This one is simple but effective. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and stuck in our heads when studying. Talking to someone we are close with can give us a few laughs and put our brains back into perspective. And I’m sure mom would LOVE to hear from you!
8. Watch a funny YouTube Video
This is also something I do on the regular. Watch some Ellen DeGeneres, some Celebrity Mean Tweets, and laugh it out!
Even if you’re not an Art Major, just doodling and letting your creative juices flow can help us get out of our heads. It’s okay if your drawing isn't the best, it’s about being the creative YOU that you are, and that you're destressing for yourself.
10. Express Gratitude
When life feels like it’s so overwhelming, it’s good to remember what we are thankful for. Write down ten things you are grateful in your life, and I promise you that you will be in a more positive mood!
